Photodynamic Therapy & Solar Damaged Skin
New light based treatments for pre-cancerous lesions, actinic keratosis and solar damaged skin has revolutionized the treatment of these unsightly and potentially dangerous skin lesions.  This new treatment removes the blemishes and lesions, giving a fresh, smooth and more youthful appearance to the skin as well as eliminating precancerous cells.

Photodynamic Therapy & Solar Damaged Skin FAQs

How does this new treatment work?
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) specifically targets the skin lesions, yet does no damage to the surrounding normal skin.  This involves using photodynamic therapy (a special light based treatment).   A special enzyme, Levulan, is placed on the skin surface.  Once the Levulan is absorbed into the skin, light is applied and selectively destroys the cells that cause the lesions to appear.

This treatment does cause the skin to become photosensitized and the patient must remain out of sunlight for a period of 48 hours after the treatment.  Sun block is advised for the next week and then the patient can return to their normal activities.

Will I require more than one treatment?
The best clinical results have been seen in patients that have had 2 to 4 treatment at monthly intervals.

How does the treatment feel on my skin?
Most patients describe the treatment with PDT as a rubber band snapping the skin or a warm sensation.  This can be minimized by applying a topical anesthetic cream to the treatment area beforehand.
