Otoplasty (Plastic Surgery of the Ears)

Best Candidates:
  • Patients who are self-conscious about the size or position of their ears, who feel their ears are too large or that the ears protrude or "stick out" too far from the skull.
  • Patients who are tired of hiding their ears underneath their hair.
  • This surgery can be performed on any age after the ears have stopped growing (usually around five to six years of age).
  • Patients who want the following changes performed to their ears: reshaped, reduced in size, and made more symmetrical and "pinned back", or earlobes made smaller and less wrinkled.
The Procedure:
Dr. Guida performs the otoplasty procedure by sculpting the cartilage and skin to create the desired effect. In some instances, he will only need to place some stitches in the cartilage to hold it permanently in place. The incision is made just behind the ear, in the natural crease where the ear is joined to the head, so the scar is well camouflaged. The results are quite significant, natural looking, and last a lifetime.

The procedure is commonly done on children before age 6, so as to prevent teasing by peers once they start school. However, the operation is equally successful on adults and, after age 5 or 6, there is no age restriction.

For earlobe reduction and wrinkle reduction, a bandage is frequently unnecessary and sutures are removed in 5-6 days. Sometimes a CO2 laser can be used to shrink the earlobes and reduce wrinkling.

Recovery Time:
Immediately after surgery Dr. Guida will place a soft dressing to the ears, which will remain in place for a few days. Older children and adults may only need the dressing for one day. Sutures are removed one week after surgery. In younger children, dissolvable sutures may be used. It is advisable to wear a protective headband over the ears for a week or two after surgery at night to prevent accidental bending of the ear cartilage during sleep.
